Senlis lies about 40 kilometres north of Paris. The city has a long history, going back 2,000 years to Roman times. In the 3rd century it was an important military stronghold, and walls up to 4 metres thick were built to withstand barbarian invasions. In 987 it was in Senlis that the Capetian dynasty was founded, by election; from then on the town became an important royal seat and one of the residences of the kings of France. The dynasty is also regarded as one that the French created for themselves, and as having separated today's "French culture" out of Frankish culture. The Capetians were once the most powerful dynasty in Europe. Although the direct Capetian line died out in the 14th century, its descendants in the broad sense are still numerous around the world. Today's King Felipe VI of Spain is a descendant of a branch of the Capetian dynasty.
All in all, Senlis is a real historical treasure, and strolling along the town's stone-paved streets is like setting out on a journey through time. The Gallo-Roman arena, ancient stone buildings, arched doorways and old town walls all breathe a deep sense of history. In the heart of the city stands the cathedral of Notre-Dame, a magnificent Roman Catholic church built between 1153 and 1191; its 78-metre south tower dates from the 13th century, and its imposing outline can be seen from far away. Every corner here is full of romance and mystery, a perfect backdrop for photos.

The 25-kilometer route is neither too short nor too long, making it suitable for intermediate hikers.

It was hot, so we moved slowly and took many breaks, but the guide was very patient and led us back to Paris safely.
