When the Alps are mentioned, we think of Switzerland's colourful scenery of lakes and mountains, and of the air of elegance that pervades the place. But it has to be said that the most beautiful region where the Alps straddle Italy and Austria is called Tyrol (German: Tirol), and it too has magnificent scenery, a match for Switzerland's.
Known as the "land of mountains", Tyrol is ringed by peaks and as pretty as a picture; it is Austria's third-largest state and is also called the "heart of the Alps". Its geography is exceptionally favoured and quite unlike anywhere else.
With more than 500 peaks over 3,000 metres, a high Alpine region covered by more than 600 different glaciers, a position at the centre of the Austrian Alps and borders with three other countries – Germany, Switzerland and Italy – Tyrol not only has convenient transport links but also blends the cultures of the four countries perfectly.

17:00: meet at Innsbruck railway station; a private transfer takes the group to the chalet. Those who arrive early can visit Innsbruck on their own. Innsbruck, a city founded nearly a thousand years ago, was once the centre of the Habsburg dynasty and also a centre of European culture and art; with its rich history and culture and its distinctive natural scenery, it is a city that combines the ancient and the modern. A branch of the Alps, the Nordkette stands on the edge of the city of Innsbruck and rises to more than 2,000 metres, with magnificent scenery. Here you can ride the cable car up, take in the breathtaking views and look down over the whole city. In this city, ancient medieval buildings and modern art blend perfectly. You can stroll along the cobbled streets of the old town, admiring the old buildings and the grand castle and feeling the weight of history, or go to the museum of modern art to admire masterpieces of contemporary art.

In the early morning a private transfer takes us to the start of the hike. Today's route is a very beautiful ridge line; it passes two mountain lakes and climbs all the way to the summit of the Rofanspitze, with all the other mountains spread out below. Austria's famous Adlerweg (Eagle Walk) is a long-distance trail that runs right across Tyrol, and one section of it also passes through the Rofan mountains. From forest to alpine meadow, then the ridge route and the summit; on the way we will meet endearing marmots and, with luck, you can see deep into the highest peaks of the main Karwendel range. From the summit you will see the Zireiner See, at 1,800 metres between the north-east ridge of the Rofanspitze and the Sonnwendjoch; its deep green colour is very beautiful.

After breakfast a private transfer takes us to the start of today's hike, where Austria's most beautiful suspension bridge awaits us. This stretch climbs steadily along a forest path, with the spectacular Schlegeisspeicher reservoir for company all the way. With every stage of the climb the scenery changes: majestic snowy Alpine peaks, a clear turquoise river valley, glaciers glittering in the sun and dense mountain forest, more than the eye can take in. When the climb reaches the section where only big boulders are left, the hut at the top comes into view, and the suspension bridge is not far behind the hut.

After breakfast a private transfer takes us to the start of today's hike, to explore this secret place, Little Tibet. Once through the forest you see a large dam, from where you can enjoy the sparkling turquoise-blue reservoir and a magnificent view of the whole Zillergrund. We go through a long tunnel, after which a broad, level track awaits us, and walk along the edge of the reservoir. There are plenty of benches along the way for a rest and, amusingly, every bench here has a different name. After about three kilometres we enter a world cut off from everything else: a sign on a wooden hut reads KLEIN TIBET, a small stone hut sits halfway up the mountainside, cattle and horses graze all around, the turquoise reservoir lies quietly among the mountains and the colourful prayer flags seem to be waving to you. Passing the prayer wheels, we climb the steps leading to the Hohenaualm: this is the secret place.

After breakfast a private transfer takes us to the start of today's hike, the Achensee. As ever, the climb is through forest. This lake, 9.4 kilometres long, lies in the Karwendel range (Austria's largest nature park), at an altitude of 929 metres; from the highest point of the walk you will see fine views of the mountains and of the Achensee, as well as a landmark cross.

After breakfast, a private transfer of about 1½ hours brings us to the Matreier Tauernhaus, where we change to the taxi that the mountain area requires, to go on into the mountains. We start our hike on arriving at the pasture huts of Innergschlöss. At the entrance to the glacier trail there are ferns, shrubs and flowers everywhere. Water runs gently over moss and stone and slips down the hillside: it is just like Jurassic Park. With the initial climb behind us, we pass a mountain waterfall and, slowly, the glacier that had been hidden by the many bends in the path appears again. We walk past the Eye of God and step onto a barren stretch of rock; these massive stones, polished by glacier and rock, are very smooth. Keep walking and you come to the foot of the glacier, where you get close to the glacier itself.
